When Echo arrived at the ranch in 2020, he was a timid and fearful donkey. He didn’t know how to lead, tie or lift his feet, and even water was a source of anxiety. It was clear that the move had triggered some old traumas, and he was scared of everything.
Fortunately, Jen and our equine caregiver had the time and patience to work with Echo consistently, moving at his pace and building trust. Over time, their efforts paid off, and Echo slowly began to find his courage, strength, and confidence.
Now, Echo the donkey is an entirely different animal. He is grounded, joyful, and exudes confidence. He comfortably wears a halter and even enjoys having his feet cleaned. He has learned that baths aren’t so scary and that the horse trailer should not be feared.
We are proud to say that Echo has come a long way since he first arrived and is now a genuine member of our ranch family. He loves receiving hugs, big smooches, and bootie scratches, and he has formed a special bond with his friend Samson, another donkey.
At the ranch, we believe that practice makes perfect. That’s why we practice loading the donkeys and horses into the horse trailer every month so that they are comfortable with the process and know that it’s no big deal. If we ever need to transport one of our animals off-property, we know they will be calm and relaxed during the journey.
Echo’s transformation is a testament to the power of patience, love, and understanding. We are so grateful to have him, the donkey, in our lives, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for him. If you’re ever in the area, we invite you to book a private tour and meet Echo and the rest of our ranch family – we promise it will be an experience you won’t forget!
