Why Shearing Matters: Compassionate Care for Our Sheep Residents

Posted on September 18, 2025

Twice a year at Sale Ranch, something a little magical happens. The buzz of clippers fills the air, fleecy coats float gently to the ground, and our sheep residents walk away looking—and feeling—brand new. Shearing day might look like simple farm work, but here, it’s an act of compassion, care, and dignity for every individual sheep who calls Sale Ranch home.

And at the heart of it all is our friend Graciano of @legacyshearing, who has been shearing with us for years. Because of his calm and gentle nature, our sheep usually relax once the work begins. While the initial buzz of clippers may startle them, the sensation of the wool slipping away often feels like a spa treatment. You can almost see their relief as the weight lifts from their backs.

Willow, a small sheep with deformed back legs, lies calmly on a soft blanket while being gently sheared by a caring shearer. Her body is relaxed, and she’s surrounded by fleecy wool as the clippers move carefully across her back. The moment reflects tenderness and trust, highlighting the compassionate care she receives at Sale Ranch. Why Do Sheep Need Shearing?

Modern sheep can’t shed their coats the way nature once intended. Through years of selective breeding, especially in breeds like Suffolk mixes, sheep have been genetically modified to produce far more wool than their ancestors. Without regular shearing, this wool just keeps growing—leading to dangerous overheating, skin infections, parasites, immobility, and even death.

Here in California, where summer days often climb into triple digits, extra wool isn’t just uncomfortable—it can be life-threatening. While wool naturally insulates in moderate climates, the heat here is simply too much. Regular shearing keeps our sheep safe, cool, and able to enjoy their days. It also helps them use our paddock brushes more effectively for scratching and self-care.

Some of our sheep have tails, while others came to us without them. Unlike farm practices where tails are often docked at birth, we do not dock tails here at Sale Ranch. For those who do have them, careful shearing around this area helps prevent fly strike and keeps them healthy.

Sadly, in animal agriculture, shearing is often done in cruelty—mass volume, rushed for profit, leaving sheep with deep cuts, stress, and fear. At Sale Ranch, we choose a different way: compassion, patience, and respect.

Why Twice a Year?

Some places shear just once annually, but in California, that’s not enough. With our hot summers and mild winters, our sheep are most comfortable when they’re shorn in both spring and fall. This schedule ensures they stay cool through the heat of summer and comfortable through the winter, when their wool has had time to grow back just enough.

Experts say the right shearing schedule depends on climate. For us, two shearings a year is the compassionate choice.

Every Sheep Is Unique

Most of our residents are Dorper or Suffolk mixes. Dorper sheep naturally shed some of their wool, but Suffolk mixes do not—making shearing essential. And then there are our smaller, special-needs residents who require even more individualized care.

Take Willow, for example. Willow uses a wheelchair due to severely deformed back legs. Shearing her requires extra maneuvering, a gentle hand, and immense patience. With the right care, Willow leaves shearing day just as refreshed and comfortable as her flockmates.

Meet Graciano: A Shearer Like No OtherGraciano gently holds up Willow, a small sheep with deformed back legs, just after her shearing. Her freshly shorn coat is smooth, and she rests calmly in his arms. Graciano’s expression is soft and caring, reflecting the deep trust and connection between them. The moment is quiet and tender—full of compassion.

Graciano is not your average shearer. He’s a second-generation professional who has been shearing sheep for most of his life—and now his daughter, Sammy, is in training to follow in his footsteps. What makes him extraordinary, though, is not just his skill but his heart.

He knows each of our sheep by name, personality, and quirks. He notes who prefers a softer touch, who gets a little anxious at first, and who struts out proudly after their “salon” treatment. Shearing special-needs animals takes extra time, patience, and kindness, and that’s exactly what Graciano brings every time.

Unlike commercial operations that shear hundreds of sheep in a single day—where speed is valued over welfare and animals often leave bloodied or terrified—at Sale Ranch the pace is slow, thoughtful, and calm. No rushing. No counting heads. Just individual care for every resident.

The Shearing Day Experience

Shearing day at Sale Ranch is filled with joy. We shear right in their home pastures, so our sheep don’t face the stress of transport or strange environments. One by one, they get their turn in Graciano’s skilled hands.

When the wool comes off, the change is immediate. The sheep step away looking lighter, brighter, and ready to play. They often seem to check each other out afterward, as if admiring their flock’s fresh new look. Our care crew smiles watching them prance around, clearly energized and comfortable again.

Why It Matters

At Sale Ranch, shearing isn’t just about maintenance—it’s about dignity, health, and respect. Every sheep deserves comfort and kindness, and that’s exactly what we provide. With Graciano’s care, our residents live the safe, stress-free lives they were always meant to have.

How You Can Help

Shearing is an essential part of keeping our sheep residents healthy and happy—and you can be part of it. A monthly gift of just $25 covers the cost to shear one sheep, ensuring their comfort through California’s toughest seasons.
