When Lillybelle rolls out to greet the morning, she doesn’t hesitate. She doesn’t wonder if her legs will carry her. She knows her wheels will. She knows she’s safe. And she knows that she is loved.
Every single day, this young lamb greets the world with joy so radiant it humbles you. Head high, eyes bright, legs crooked but determined—she moves through the Bean’s Barn paddock with a spark that speaks louder than any words ever could.
But Lillybelle’s story didn’t begin here in the safety of sanctuary. She was born in Northern California, on a small homestead that had been left largely unoccupied, where sheep were kept as “living lawn mowers” to manage overgrown vegetation. There wasn’t proper fencing in place to keep them safe, so they were fitted with shock collars to prevent them from wandering off.
It was here, alone and unsupervised, that Lillybelle came into the world.
A Beginning Marked by Pain and Witness
Lillybelle’s parents were siblings, and the deformities in her front legs were a direct result of inbreeding. Her arrival into the world wasn’t met with care, but with makeshift splints made from PVC pipe and duct tape. These were left on for weeks, soaked in filth and wrapped so tightly that they caused deep wounds and serious infection.
Even worse, the splints kept her from nursing under her mother or reaching down to graze. She was malnourished and weakening. No one on the property took action to help her.
But Lillybelle’s suffering didn’t go unseen.
Neighbors noticed. They fed her over the fence, knowing she wasn’t getting enough to eat. They advocated for her, and eventually convinced the property owner to surrender her to Sale Ranch, where she could finally receive the care and life she deserved.
The Road to Sanctuary
Her journey to safety began with Sarah from @northstatecatcoalition, who raised the alarm. Caroline, one of our board members, stepped in and helped coordinate her rescue. Lillybelle was brought to UC Davis for emergency medical attention and an initial evaluation of her front legs.
Then came a wave of kindness: Harmony gave her a warm overnight stay at @goatlandia_sanctuary. Adam from @hooves_on_the_highway transported her the rest of the way to Sale Ranch.
When she arrived in sunbaked Southern California, even after all she’d been through, we saw something steady and quiet in her eyes. A willingness to trust. A readiness to begin again.
A New Chapter in Bean’s Barn
Today, Lillybelle lives peacefully in Bean’s Barn. Her cellulitis has healed. Her spirit is strong. While her legs remain deformed, she has some mobility on her own, but it’s limited. Walking is tiring. Her world would be small without help.
That help came in the form of a custom wheelchair, made possible by compassionate supporters. Now, Lillybelle moves with ease. She explores. She plays. She doesn’t have to choose between pain and motion. Her wheels gave her the freedom to be who she was always meant to be.
A Bond Beyond Words
Even more beautiful than her mobility is the connection she’s found. Lillybelle shares an extraordinary bond with Ruby Rae, a fellow special-needs sheep. The two are rarely apart. They rest together, eat together, and seem to understand each other without needing sound.
They remind us every day that healing isn’t just physical—it’s emotional too. And it thrives in community.
Her Story Isn’t Over
While Lillybelle is thriving now, her care is far from over. As she grows, her wheelchair will need to be adjusted, and eventually replaced. She requires regular veterinary care, dietary support, and the same everyday comforts and enrichment we want for any being living a peaceful life.
This is what sanctuary means. Not just rescue, but lifelong support and the dignity of being seen as someone, not something.
