Starting seeds in blocks of dirt, also known as soil blocking, and seedlings growing

Tiny Dirt Cubes, Big Garden Energy

Posted on 17 Mar at 1:37 pm

At Sale Ranch, the garden is doing more than growing food. It helps nourish our animal residents, provides fresh produce for food insecure families in our community, and contributes ingredients for our Seasonal Suppers. At our off-grid sanctuary, even the way we start seeds reflects the bigger picture: grow thoughtfully, waste less, and make every part of the work count.

One of the methods helping us do that is called soil blocking.

What is soil blocking?

Soil blocking is a seed-starting method that uses compact cubes of soil instead of relying on plastic pots or trays. Each seed is started in its own small block, then transplanted into the garden when ready. It may look a little unusual at first, but it is a smart and practical way to give seedlings a healthier start.

Why we use it at Sale Ranch

We are always looking for ways to do things with more care and less waste, and soil blocking checks both boxes. It helps seedlings develop stronger root systems, reduces transplant shock, and cuts back on our dependence on plastic trays.

Here’s why that matters:

  • Roots grow more naturally instead of circling around inside a plastic cell
  • Seedlings transition more easily when moved into the garden
  • Less plastic use means less waste over time
  • Healthier starts give our spring and summer crops a better chance to thrive

It is a small change, but one with real benefits.

Using what we have

Soil blocking is not the only way we try to reduce waste. We are not pretending soil blocking means we never use trays again. We also reuse old cell trays when they still have life left in them. Around here, sustainability is not about being perfect. It is about making better choices when we can and being thoughtful with the resources we have.

That approach matters even more at an off-grid sanctuary, where every system needs to work hard and make sense.

What we’re starting now

The greenhouse is currently filling up with our mid-spring and summer seeds, and this season’s lineup gives a good picture of what is ahead.

We are starting:

  • Roma, Brandywine, and Dr. Wyche’s tomatoes
  • Golden Glory, patty pan, and zucchini squash
  • Beets and sweet snap peas
  • Cosmos, zinnias, stock, and sunflowers

The flowers are not just there to be pretty. They also help attract pollinators, which play an important role in keeping the garden healthy and productive. So even the blooms are pulling their weight.

Why this matters beyond the garden

The work happening in the greenhouse now supports much more than a future harvest. It is part of how we grow clean food for our animal residents, support food insecure families, and bring fresh ingredients into experiences like our Seasonal Suppers.

The Spring Seasonal Supper is on Saturday, May 16, and you can see all upcoming events here.

That said, the real story here is not the event calendar. It is that even something as humble as seed starting can reflect the values behind everything we do: care deeply, waste less, and grow with intention.

The thriving garden a Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary

The takeaway

Soil blocking may not be flashy, but it is one of those behind-the-scenes practices that says a lot about how we do things at Sale Ranch. These tiny dirt cubes are helping us build a healthier, more sustainable garden from the ground up, and that is exactly the kind of energy we want around here.
