While California winters may not come with the snow and freezing temperatures of other parts of the country, we still have to make sure our animal residents stay comfortable, safe, and dry during the colder months. At Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary, winter means rain and wind, so our team gets busy preparing the barns and shelters to protect our hoofed and feathered friends. Here’s a peek at how we get ready for winter at the Ranch!
Sand and Shelter: The Perfect Winter Combo
A key part of our winter prep is adding sand to the barn floors. Not only does this provide a soft cushion for our animals, but it also helps keep them dry. Sand is excellent for draining water away, especially when paired with the bedding we add once it gets colder. In our horse shelters, the sand also acts as a barrier, diverting rainwater away so that our equine residents can stay dry and cozy all season long.
Wind, Rain, and Temps: Tackling All Three
California’s winter weather is typically a mix of wind, rain, and cooler temperatures. While many animals can handle two of these three factors at a time, we ensure that no one has to face all three! Our shelters provide protection from the rain and wind, while our insulated barns (installed last year!) help to keep the cold at bay. Insulation has been a game-changer, not just for winter but for keeping things cooler during those scorching summer days too.
Shelter Is Key
Wind and rain can be harsh on our animal residents, so providing adequate shelter is a top priority. Every animal at Sale Ranch has access to a warm, dry space where they can escape the elements, whether it’s a cozy barn stall or an outdoor shelter. These spaces help them manage the unpredictability of California’s winter weather and keep them happy and healthy.
We’re Ready for Winter!
While prepping for winter in California may seem easy compared to other places, it’s a crucial part of caring for our beloved residents. By focusing on comfortable bedding, smart water diversion, and durable shelters, we ensure everyone stays snug through the rainy season.
As we continue to work hard preparing for the colder months, we’re reminded that #KindnessLivesHere every day, in every season. Thank you for supporting Sale Ranch, where compassion is always in season.
