Happy Hooves, Happy Hearts: Why Routine Trims Matter at Sale Ranch

Posted on October 17, 2025

If you’ve ever heard the soft click-click of hooves as our goats or sheep move across the pastures, you’re hearing one of the most overlooked sounds of sanctuary life — healthy, happy feet.

Hoof care may not sound glamorous, but for our animal residents, it’s everything. Healthy hooves mean freedom — to walk, play, climb, and explore without pain. And here at Sale Ranch, we like to think of trim days as a little bit of wellness… and a little bit of humor. Because after a fresh trim, our goats and sheep don’t just walk away — they strut off showing off their “new shoes.”

Why Hooves Matter More Than You Think

A goat, sheep, pig, cow, or horse’s hooves are like the foundation of a house — when they’re not cared for, cracks start to show everywhere else. Overgrown or uneven hooves can cause pain, poor posture, and joint strain that affect the entire body.

In the wild, rocky terrain naturally keeps hooves worn down. But at a sanctuary like ours, with dry, dusty pastures and soft soil, hooves grow faster than they wear down. That’s where we come in — to give nature a little help.

At Sale Ranch, hoof care isn’t an occasional chore — it’s part of our residents’ regular wellness routine, right alongside brushing, checkups, and enrichment.

The Crew Behind the Clipping

During shearing season, our incredible shearer takes care of trims for the sheep. But since hooves grow much faster than wool, waiting that long just doesn’t work.

That’s why Founder Jen and Matt, part of our animal care team, handle hoof care throughout the year. Jen is the skilled trimmer — carefully shaping and balancing each hoof — while Matt is the steady hand keeping our wiggly residents calm and safe.

Between the two of them, it’s part spa day, part trust exercise, and occasionally, part comedy show.

Hoof Care for Everyone

It’s not just the goats and sheep who get their hooves done around here. Our farrier is scheduled throughout the year to manage the cow hooves, ensuring our larger residents like Faith and her herd stay balanced, comfortable, and pain-free.

And our equine residents have their hooves trimmed on a regular schedule as well. Horses, cows, goats, and sheep — everyone at Sale Ranch needs healthy feet to live their best life.

Because whether you’re a 1,200-pound steer or a 35-pound sheep, sound feet mean a sound body.

How It’s Done — Gently and with Love

A typical trim starts with a calm environment, patience, and a few goat-approved snacks. Jen checks each hoof for overgrowth or uneven wear, then trims and smooths them for balance and comfort.

We don’t use chutes or harsh restraints. Our approach is gentle, respectful, and built on trust. If someone’s feeling unsure, we slow down. Every trim is a conversation — not a confrontation.

As Matt likes to say, “It’s all about the rhythm. Once they realize we’re helping, they relax.” And he’s right. By the end, even the fussiest goats seem to understand it’s for their good.

Preventing Pain Before It Starts

Healthy hooves prevent a whole range of problems: painful cracking, infection, and difficulty walking. Routine trims keep posture aligned, circulation flowing, and mobility strong — especially important for our older or special-needs residents.

Some of our residents — like Lillybelle, Sprinkles, Hazel, Jolene, and Willow — require extra maintenance because their limited mobility means they don’t naturally wear their hooves down. For them, hoof care is essential to prevent discomfort and keep their bodies supported as they move through the world in their own unique ways.

Hoof health isn’t just about clean feet. It’s about comfort, dignity, and freedom.

The “New Shoes” Moment

We’ll admit it — we get a little joy out of watching everyone walk away after a trim. There’s a distinct change in their step, a lightness in their movement. That’s when we say they’re showing off their new shoes — not fancy ones, just perfectly balanced, well-cared-for hooves that make every step feel good. And honestly, we think they know it too.

More Than Maintenance — It’s Love

We could wait until problems appear, but that’s not how we do things at Sale Ranch. We believe in proactive care, not reactive fixes. Hoof trims take time, skill, and patience — but they’re one of the most important ways we show love. Because every step our residents take matters. And when a once-limping sheep starts walking easily again, that’s the reward — quiet, powerful proof that care and kindness change everything.

You Help Keep Them Moving

Every trim, every tool, and every gentle touch is made possible by our supporters. When you become a monthly Sale Ranch Superhero, you help keep our residents healthy, steady, and strong — one hoof at a time.
