From Broken to Brave: Paul’s Comeback Continues

Posted on June 15, 2025

A recovery update from Sale Ranch

Last month, we introduced you to Paul—a gentle young goat born with weak legs due to harmful selective breeding, who had just undergone emergency surgery for a painful and life-threatening fetlock rupture.

Today, we’re following up with some hopeful news: Paul is healing, and his story continues to be one of quiet courage, expert care, and the power of love.

Home Again—and Never Alone 🐐💕

Paul the goat stands beside one of his goat friends in their pen, both alert and relaxed, enjoying each other’s company in a peaceful, sunlit space at Sale Ranch. After a week at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital, Paul returned to the sanctuary and was greeted with joy by his herd. Though he has a long 2–3 month recovery ahead, we prepared a cozy, quiet stall just for him—a safe space to rest, restore, and slowly regain strength.

And while Paul may be taking it easy, he’s never alone.

Every day, his gentle buddy Lenny—one of the most nurturing goats at the ranch—chooses to stay by Paul’s side. While the rest of the herd explores, Lenny keeps Paul company in the shade, offering the kind of quiet presence that says more than words ever could.

Their friendship is a powerful reminder: farmed animals are deeply emotional beings. They form bonds, offer comfort, and show love in the most sincere ways.

A Big Step Forward—With a Bump in the Road 🩼

This week marked a major milestone—Paul returned to UC Davis for his post-op orthopedic exam and cast removal. Accompanied by our Facilities Manager, Brenda, Paul made the journey north for a full evaluation.

And the outcome? Mainly good news.
His healing is progressing well, and the cast is now off. He’s been fitted with a soft brace for added support as he enters the next phase of recovery.

Paul initially came home using his leg—an encouraging sign—but in the days since, we’ve hit a small setback. He’s been struggling with some pain, which we’re working to manage closely with prescribed medication. It’s not unusual in cases like his, and we’re doing everything we can to keep him comfortable and supported as he continues to heal.

Even in discomfort, Paul remains his gentle, resilient self—taking each day as it comes, surrounded by care and compassion.

Why It Matters 🌱

In a system that views animals like Paul as products, injuries like his are often a death sentence. But at Sale Ranch, we believe every life matters—especially the fragile ones.

Here, Paul isn’t just surviving—he’s recovering, with dedicated care, comfort, and the chance to heal at his own pace. He’s not a commodity—he’s a patient, a friend, and an individual worthy of compassion, dignity, and love.

His journey is far from over, but every step forward is a reminder of what’s possible when we choose kindness.
