Evie the Warrior: From Struggles on the Streets of Mexico to Strides of Hope

Posted on September 14, 2023

When you meet Evie, the first thing you notice is her spirit. This young, vibrant dog, at only 2 1/2 years old, is a symbol of resilience and hope. Rescued from the streets of Mexico, her journey has been both touching and challenging.

In late August, Evie faced an alarming situation. She began bleeding uncontrollably from her nose. Without hesitation, we rushed her to the ER at the VCA Emergency Center in Murrieta. Initial relief from stopping the bleeding was short-lived, leading to a distressing return to the ER.

By August 31, Evie was undergoing a crucial blood transfusion. The aim was to boost her platelet and RBC counts. Though she showed signs of strength and had stopped bleeding, she was still in critical condition.

September 1 brought more hope. Evie’s body began producing RBCs on its own, marking a major milestone towards her health. Her past, filled with challenges, only highlighted the incredible strength she possesses.

However, the journey had its ups and downs. Evie faced setbacks, yet her spirit remained unyielding. The ongoing medical investigations included treatments for Ehrlichia, a tick-borne disease, and potential autoimmune concerns affecting her platelets.

By September 14, joy and gratitude prevailed. Evie’s health metrics showed consistent improvement. Most of her blood panel levels had normalized, but her road to recovery continues. Her liver enzymes require attention, and she undergoes regular checks for Ehrlichia.

While the latest updates on Evie are promising, we remain vigilant. The next steps involve carefully managing her medications, possibly tapering off certain treatments, and determining any long-term care she might need. With her infectious zest for life and the support from all of you, we remain hopeful and deeply appreciative.

Thank you for being an integral part of Evie’s journey towards wellness.
