When Sully arrived at Sale Ranch in August 2024, she brought with her an infectious joy that was impossible to ignore. Rescued in collaboration with Farm Animal Refuge, Sully was saved from a life of exploitation in the agricultural industry.
She quickly became a favorite among our team, earning the nickname “little tornado” for her boundless energy and playful spirit. Whether she was making friends with volunteers or soaking up love from our staff, Sully’s presence was a daily reminder of why we fight for animals like her.
Her spay—a routine procedure to ensure her long-term health—was meant to be a critical step toward a happy, healthy life. Tragically, Sully’s body failed to recover from the anesthesia. Her sudden loss left us heartbroken, but her legacy will forever shine as a beacon of resilience and love.
The Heartbreak of Loss
Running a sanctuary means more than feeding animals and cleaning barns. It means pouring your heart into every life you touch, knowing that sometimes, no matter how hard you try, heartbreak is inevitable.

This year, we created a memorial garden where the names of our departed residents will be honored. Through our “Rocks of Remembrance” event, volunteers painted stones bearing the names of animals who touched our lives. These stones will soon rest in the garden—a permanent reminder of the love we shared and the lives we cherished.
Hugging a cow, goat, or sheep doesn’t erase the pain of loss, but it reminds us why we keep going.
The Hard Work Behind the Scenes
Sanctuary life is rewarding, but it’s also physically demanding and emotionally draining. With over 90 residents relying on us, every day is a balance of long hours, early mornings, and constant care.
Under the compassionate leadership of Jen, our team of staff and volunteers works tirelessly to provide love, medical attention, and enrichment for animals who have endured so much. From administering medication to hoof trims, every task serves a larger purpose: to give our residents the second (or third, or fourth) chance they deserve.
But sanctuary work is not without its misconceptions. Many people think it’s all snuggles and sunshine—and while those moments exist, they’re paired with the heavy knowledge that Sale Ranch can only physically provide sanctuary for a small number of animals. However, our mission extends far beyond our fences. Losses like Sully’s remind us of the weight of this work, but they also deepen our commitment—not only to the animals who depend on us at Sale Ranch but also to the countless others still trapped in animal agriculture systems. Through advocacy, education, and compassion, we can create change for all animals, one life at a time.
