At Sale Ranch, the garden is doing more than growing food. It helps nourish our animal residents, provides fresh produce for food insecure families in our community, and contributes ingredients for our Seasonal Suppers. At our off-grid sanctuary, even the way we start seeds reflects the bigger picture: grow thoughtfully, waste less, and make every part of the work count.
One of the methods helping us do that is called soil blocking.
What is soil blocking?
Soil blocking is a seed-starting method that uses compact cubes of soil instead of relying on plastic pots or trays. Each seed is started in its own small block, then transplanted into the garden when ready. It may look a little unusual at first, but it is a smart and practical way to give seedlings a healthier start.
