More than twelve years ago, we embarked on a mission to fulfill a lifelong dream of offering refuge to horses in need. This journey was rooted in our desire to live intentionally, serving a greater purpose. Choosing to live off the grid, reducing our carbon footprint, growing clean and nutritious produce, and embracing the power of kindness, we set out to make a difference.
A Heartbreaking Call
Three years into our journey, we received a call from a friend at a dairy livestock sale about a heartbreaking situation—a pile of discarded newborn baby goats. Most of the babies had already passed away, but there were a dozen barely clinging to life. We took in two critically sick babies, Kid Rock and his sister Clover. This moment marked a turning point for us, revealing the harsh reality faced by animals bred into existence for food.
The Harsh Reality
Kid Rock, being a male in an industry that profits from selling mothers’ milk, was considered an unwanted byproduct. Female babies who are sick or extra are also deemed unwanted. Too small to be profitable for their flesh, these hour-old babies were left in a pile to pass away slowly on their own. Sadly, Kid Rock and Clover’s story is not unique but rather the norm in this industry.
A Life-Changing Moment
We were unaware of these practices until that fateful phone call, which forever changed our lives. It propelled us to grow into the sanctuary we are today. We lost Clover too soon to her autoimmune disease three years after saving her life. Today, Kid Rock is our rambunctious and gentle boy, now at the ripe old age of 9 1/2 years. Although he has the same autoimmune condition as Clover, we have successfully managed it for years. Sadly, his condition is now accelerating.
A Commitment to Comfort
While we don’t know how much time we have left together, we are committed to ensuring Kid Rock is comfortable and happy. When the time comes, we will help him walk home with the dignity and love he deserves.
Signs of Improvement
Despite a difficult week of stress and uncertainty in mid-May, Kid Rock began to show signs of improvement. Although still very sick, he has been joyfully enjoying his snacks over the past week. Our medical treatments, including joint injections, appear to be working as he is now standing more comfortably. We have also been able to take him off pain meds and put him back on his daily anti-inflammatory medication. This is incredible news!
Strawberry Season Joy
And it’s strawberry season! Kid Rock couldn’t be happier. 🍓
A Testament to Resilience
Kid Rock’s journey is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of compassion. He has been an integral part of Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary’s history and existence, reminding us every day why #KindnessLivesHere.
