A Scary Chapter for Gigi - with a picture of medical instruments and Gigi the horse on the right.

GiGi Is Healing, But Her Journey Isn’t Over

Posted on 17 Mar at 2:42 pm

Over the past several weeks, GiGi has been through a frightening medical crisis.

What began with a serious infection quickly became much more complicated. She needed hospitalization, intensive treatment, repeat veterinary visits, ongoing monitoring, medication, and continued follow-up care at the ranch. At one point, her veterinary team discovered a second large abscess in her chest, which had to be drained. There were some very scary moments, and for a time, the road ahead felt uncertain.

GiGi is one of the deeply loved residents here at Sale Ranch, and watching her go through this has been heartbreaking.

Gigi after returning to Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary following her emergency medical treatment

The good news is that we are finally seeing signs of real progress.

At GiGi’s re-exam, her lab work showed a major improvement, which was a very encouraging sign. She no longer needs chest lavages or antibiotics, which is a huge step forward. We will continue to monitor her closely and recheck labs as needed.

That progress is a tremendous relief, but her journey is not over.

Recovery like this does not end with one hospital stay. It takes continued veterinary care, follow-up visits, lab work, treatment, and close attention every step of the way.

When GiGi needed urgent help, we did what we always hope we can do in a crisis: we said yes.

Yes to hospitalization.
Yes to treatment.
Yes to follow-up care.
Yes to giving her every chance to heal.

Her hospital stay alone totaled $5,762, and her continued care has added hundreds more in follow-up visits, repeat labs, and treatment. We were able to move quickly because we used funds set aside for emergency medical care.

Now, we need to rebuild that fund.

Not only so GiGi’s recovery can continue with the care she still needs, but so we are also ready for the next animal who needs urgent help.

That is the reality of sanctuary life. Emergencies do not wait for the perfect moment. When an animal is sick, in pain, or in crisis, care has to happen immediately.

Help Rebuild the Medical Fund

If GiGi’s story has touched your heart, we hope you will make a gift today to help rebuild the medical fund that made her care possible.

Your gift will help us:

  • continue supporting GiGi’s recovery
  • restore the emergency funds used during her crisis
  • stay ready for the next animal who needs lifesaving care

Here are a few ways your donation can help:

  • $25 helps support follow-up care and lab work
  • $50 helps cover part of a veterinary visit
  • $100 helps support treatment, medication, and ongoing monitoring

Every gift helps strengthen the safety net that animals like GiGi depend on.

Thank you for loving GiGi with us, and for helping make sure that urgent, compassionate care remains possible when it is needed most.
