Winter Gardening in Southern California

Posted on October 18, 2024

Growing Greens and Root Veggies in Zone 9b

One of the best things about living in Southern California, especially in Zone 9b, is the ability to grow fresh food all year long. While much of the country is bundling up and letting their gardens rest for winter, we’re lucky to keep planting cool-season crops! With some planning, you can enjoy leafy greens and root veggies throughout the colder months. Even better, this fresh produce benefits not only us but also the animal residents at Sale Ranch. Let’s dive into how to get your winter garden ready and the added bonus it brings to the sanctuary.

What to Grow in a Winter Garden

Broccoli thrives in the cool winter soil

Winter is the perfect time to plant cool-season crops such as:

  • Leafy Greens: Kale, spinach, lettuce, arugula, and Swiss chard thrive in cooler weather and keep producing throughout the winter months.
  • Root Vegetables: Carrots, radishes, beets, and turnips grow well in cool temperatures and can be harvested over time.
  • Brassicas: Broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts are ideal for winter planting, with harvests coming later in the season.

These crops not only provide fresh produce for us but also for our animal residents, offering essential nutrients that promote their health and well-being.

Prepping Your Garden Beds

Start by clearing out any old plants and weeds from your summer garden to prepare for winter planting. This helps reduce pests and diseases that could harm your crops or your animals. Loosen up the soil to promote healthy root growth, and add compost or organic matter to restore nutrients for your new plants.

Adjusting Water Needs

Winter gardening requires adjusting your watering schedule. With cooler temperatures and occasional rainfall, your plants won’t need as much water as they did during the hot summer months. Be careful not to overwater, but keep an eye on the soil moisture, especially if rain is scarce.

Adding mulch around your plants is a great way to conserve water and keep the soil warm during cooler nights.

Benefits for Our Animal Residents

Ginger and Buck are two of our animal residents that love fresh produce

Growing food year-round also means we can provide fresh, nutrient-rich produce to our animal residents throughout the winter. Fresh greens and root veggies are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which support proper digestion, immune function, and overall health. This helps promote healthy growth and development, ensuring that the animals at Sale Ranch thrive through every season.

By keeping our garden productive, we’re able to nourish our animal residents with fresh, wholesome produce, contributing to their well-being in every way possible.
