It was just after midnight when Jen sat quietly in the barn with Jason.
The air was still, the night quiet. Jason lay next to her on a bed of fresh straw—his brown coat rising and falling slowly with each breath. Only hours earlier, he had spiked a dangerously high fever and had withdrawn from his usual self. But now, as Jen rested beside him, speaking softly into the darkness, he shifted slightly, acknowledging her presence. He was fighting—and so were we.
This is what sanctuary looks like.
Not in the Instagram-perfect moments—but in the quiet, hard ones. The late-night fever checks. The needle pokes. The held breaths. The whispered encouragements. The hopeful prayers.
And this past week has been full of them.
This Week at Sale Ranch: A Glimpse Into Compassionate Care
🌿 Gwen had a setback as another abscess formed along her jawline. It was drained, flushed, and she’s back on antibiotics. Her bone remains healthy, and her spirit? Unshaken.
🐐 Thelma (aka Thug Muffin) continues to fight through a deep and painful staph infection in her udder. Dr. Martin accessed a second pocket of infection and packed it with antibiotics. She’s receiving dual medications and daily pain support—and she’s still giving us her signature sass.
🐐 Jason, our sweet and gentle goat, became lethargic on Tuesday and developed a dangerously high fever by Wednesday. Blood was drawn, and he was immediately started on two antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and round-the-clock monitoring.
🐄 Faith, our beloved senior cow, had a tough Monday after a wonderful weekend. She’s now stable, but we’re preparing for another set of costly joint injections in her front feet—essential to keep her comfortable and mobile.
These are not isolated cases. They are part of an unrelenting wave of medical needs we’ve been navigating for months.
When “Why Don’t You Just…” Hurts the Most
We’ve received a few messages lately asking:
“Why do you keep doing this when euthanasia would be cheaper?”
It’s a heartbreaking question. And here’s the answer:
Because sanctuary means standing firm—especially when it gets hard.
In animal agriculture, animals like Gwen, Jason, and Thelma are viewed as commodities—things.
At Sale Ranch, we see them as individuals. Worthy of compassion. Deserving of care. Worth fighting for.
We know each of our residents. We know their strength, their stories, and their potential. And we know—without question—that every single one of them has more good life ahead.
This is not a Hail Mary. These are serious but treatable conditions.
And their care isn’t driven by emotion—it’s guided by the expertise of our medical team, led by Dr. Martin, our Medical Director, who works closely with us to evaluate what’s truly in each animal’s best interest. Every treatment plan is grounded in professional judgment and deep experience.
The Financial Reality: $2,500 in Emergency Care This Week Alone
We don’t share this to guilt anyone. We share it because transparency matters.
This week alone, our medical costs have surpassed $2,500. And that’s just for urgent care—abscess lancing, cultures, medications, injections, and 24/7 monitoring.
We’re not just spending.
We’re making difficult decisions and adjusting operations to meet this moment with integrity.
Here’s how:
-
🚫 Intake Freeze: We’ve been closed to new intakes for months and will likely remain so through year-end.
-
📉 Payroll Reductions: We’ve reduced caregiver hours, and I’ve personally taken on the difference as a volunteer.
-
🔧 Critical Projects Only: All non-essential repairs and improvements have been paused.
-
💵 No Debt, Always: We stretch every dollar, spend conservatively, and operate entirely debt-free.
“We don’t back down just because it’s hard,” says longtime volunteer Caroline.
“These aren’t lost causes. They’re resilient souls with more life to live—and we fight for that life, every single time.”
