Paul’s Fight to Heal — And the Compassion That Brought Him Home

Posted on May 18, 2025

Paul is home!

Just one week earlier, he was fighting for his life—emerging from surgery only to face a terrifying complication that nearly took it all away.

This is the story of a gentle goat, born into exploitation, who defied the odds. It’s a story of emergency surgery, quiet resilience, and the power of kindness to rewrite a life.

On May 14, exactly one week after undergoing life-saving surgery, Paul returned home to Sale Ranch. Brenda—our Facilities Manager and a cornerstone of the team since 2018—made the long drive back from UC Davis with our sweet boy. As the trailer door opened, his brothers greeted him with excited bleats.

Now, Paul rests in a cozy recovery stall built just for him—safe, warm, and surrounded by love. His healing journey will take another 2–3 months, but the hardest part is already behind him. He has a check-up appointment at UC Davis next month. For now, though, he’s exactly where he belongs.

And we couldn’t have brought him home without your support.

From Peace to Uncertainty

Six years ago, Sale Ranch rescued Paul and his two brothers as babies from a genetic breeding operation designed to maximize milk production. Sadly, Paul and his brothers came into a world where love wasn’t the goal—use was.

At just two months old, Paul was scheduled to be shipped overseas. Instead, he found sanctuary here at Sale Ranch. Since then, he’s been one of our gentlest residents—peaceful, playful, and deeply bonded to his siblings.

Everything changed two months ago when Paul began limping on one of his front legs. Despite rest and medication, the problem worsened. He needed specialized care.

A Complicated Diagnosis

On May 1, Paul was transported to UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for advanced diagnostics. The team there confirmed that his fetlock joint—similar to a human ankle—had ruptured due to severe soft tissue damage.

Further imaging revealed a congenital abnormality in his other leg. This unexpected discovery pointed to long-term genetic weaknesses likely caused by the breeding practices he endured before rescue.

Paul’s condition wasn’t just the result of an injury. It was the outcome of a system that treated him as a product rather than a living being.

Surgery and a Scare

Paul underwent surgery on May 7 to stabilize his fetlock with a titanium plate. The procedure went smoothly. However, as he awoke from anesthesia, Paul chewed part of his breathing tube, and it became lodged in his throat.

His medical team acted immediately, performing an emergency tracheotomy to restore his airway. Their swift action saved his life. Paul received morphine for pain management, and his care team monitored him closely as his healing began.

By May 8, Paul’s leg had been casted, and his post-op care was underway. His pain was significant, but his team worked tirelessly to manage it.

On May 10, Paul stood and began putting weight on his cast for the first time. That moment was pivotal—it showed us that recovery was truly possible.

By May 13, he was stable, his medications were being tapered, and he was finally ready to come home.

Why Paul’s Story Matters

Paul’s journey is more than a medical case—it’s a symbol of what happens when we choose compassion over profit. His story reflects the deep resilience animals carry, even when the systems around them have failed.

Thanks to your support, Paul has a future. He will run again. He will play again. He will be with his brothers again.

And he will never, ever be seen as a product again.
