Wisdom From the Barn: What Our Residents Taught Us This Year

Posted on December 17, 2025

Every year at Sale Ranch brings its own rhythm. Some seasons stretch us, some heal us, and others remind us—often in surprising ways—why we walk beside these animals day after day.

As 2025 comes to a close, we’re looking back on the lessons our animal residents shared with us this year. Each one offered something different, something needed, something true.

Here are four stories that shaped us.

Lillybelle: The Joy of Trying New Things

If one tiny lamb could embody determination, it’s Lillybelle. This year, she reminded us that joy doesn’t wait for perfect circumstances—it grows when we’re brave enough to keep exploring.

Lesson: Joy lives in the trying.

Navigating the ranch with the help of a wheelchair isn’t always easy, but Lillybelle approached every new experience with bright eyes and a lifted chin, as if proudly showing off her courage. She made new friends, forged a sweet bond with Ruby Rae, and even embraced one of the biggest “firsts” of her life: a spring shearing.

With her fresh haircut and her best friend by her side, she showed us that joy expands when we do.

Gracie: Strength Means Showing Up—Even When It’s Hard

Gracie walked through a tough year. Early signs of swelling led to urgent care, and we soon learned she was facing the return of a serious infection she had battled before. It was painful, fast-moving, and required immediate treatment.

But Gracie met every hurdle with quiet determination.

Lesson: Strength is steady, not loud.

Her hospital stay earlier this year—our most expensive medical case in 13 years—was a true fight for her life. And when the infection returned, we leaned in again. Not because it was easy. Not because it was convenient. But because Gracie showed us she still had years of good life ahead and the will to reach for them.

She handled every haul, every procedure, every moment with heart. She never stopped trying.
And we never stopped meeting her in that effort.

Gracie reminded us that when someone is fighting to live, you stand beside them—fully, compassionately, and without hesitation.

Molly: Growing Into Yourself Takes Time

A polaroid picture of Molly the feisty lovable pig

Molly arrived tiny, vulnerable, and full of personality—and quickly became a house baby. She bonded to Jen, claimed a favorite spot on the sofa, and ruled the home alongside the house dogs (Evie, Sunshine, and Pip).

What surprised us most? For a pig who loves affection, she absolutely refuses to be picked up. The squeal she lets out could pierce the sky.
This girl knows her boundaries.

As she grew, she transitioned outside slowly and thoughtfully. First, she slept on a cozy bed just steps from Jen’s window. Then she moved down near the potbelly pigs—Merle, Janice, and Etta—where she could start getting to know them safely through the fence line.

Staff and volunteers spent time with her each day as she adjusted, offering comfort, enrichment, and company.

Lesson: Independence is something you grow into, not something you rush.

With her toys, her fence friends, and a widening sense of confidence, Molly is discovering who she is—one brave little step at a time.

Amber: Show Up for Your People

Amber is busy—delightfully, purposefully busy.
Every day, she either climbs out of her paddock or convinces a staff member to let her out so she can begin her rounds.

Her mission? Make sure everyone at the ranch is okay.

She trots from resident to resident, offering hellos and gentle check-ins. She greets volunteers, supervises staff, and even visits the house dogs. The only place she’s banned from is the garden—because she would snack her way through the entire thing.

Lesson: Community is built by those who show up.

Amber reminds us that care is active. Friendship is checking in. Love is movement. Her self-appointed role as the ranch hall monitor may make us laugh, but it also inspires us. She shows us that showing up—consistently and wholeheartedly—is one of the most powerful ways to love others.

What This Year Taught All of Us

This was a year of tender balance. After 13 years, many of our animal residents are aging and needing more medical support, and we remain committed to providing elevated care—always guided by quality of life. We walked through emergencies. We made hard calls. We stayed steady.

And we celebrated, too.

We welcomed hundreds of visitors at events throughout the year. We shared community tables filled with delicious plant-based meals. We grew thousands of pounds of clean, beautiful produce—feeding both our animal residents and our local food pantry. We watched hearts open.

Through it all, these four residents—Lillybelle, Gracie, Molly, and Amber—offered lessons that shaped us. They captured the spirit of Sale Ranch: joy, resilience, growth, compassion, and community.
