Inside the Life of an Animal Sanctuary Founder

Posted on April 23, 2023

Jen Sale spoke at the San Diego Vegan Festival about her work as the founder of Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary. She shared the stage with other animal sanctuary leaders and talked about their experiences and goals for their work. Many of the festival’s 5,000+ attendees were interested in Jen’s insights into what it takes to start and run an animal sanctuary.

Starting an animal sanctuary is a challenging but noble task that requires lots of hard work and dedication. Jen advised those who want to create a sanctuary to volunteer, connect with other sanctuaries, get a mentor, and be prepared to give up their life for one of the 24/7 services.

Animal sanctuaries have several critical impacts on their communities, such as providing medical assistance and forever homes for farm animals in need, educational opportunities, participating in sustainable living practices, and volunteer opportunities. Jen added that Sale Ranch also gives back to the community by donating fresh produce to a local food bank that feeds veterans, senior citizens, and food-insecure families.

Running an animal sanctuary involves lots of responsibilities and tasks similar to managing a small business. When asked about her typical day, Jen said that it varies outside of feeding the animals and completing barn chores. Jen wears many hats, but taking care of the animals is always her top priority.

Jen and other animal sanctuary leaders had inspiring conversations with festival attendees about their work. They left the festival inspired to work towards a better future for animals and a more compassionate world for all.
