Gwen’s Road to Recovery: A Tale of Resilience at Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary

Posted on October 23, 2023

A remarkable story of resilience has unfolded in the heart of Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary. This month, our gentle Gwen, a sheep-like no other, faced challenges that tested her strength. With unwavering dedication from our team and Gwen’s remarkable spirit, she’s embarked on a journey of recovery that showcases the incredible resilience of our animal residents.

It all began when Gwen began limping on her left hind leg, a sign of discomfort that couldn’t be ignored. Dr. G was called in for an examination, and what we discovered on the X-rays was unexpected – significant arthritis in her stifle, essentially her knee. To alleviate her pain, we injected the joint, hoping to provide her some relief. Our expectations were high, but sometimes, life has its plans.

Gwen’s pain persisted, and her lameness didn’t improve as we had hoped, so we knew it was time for a deeper investigation. That’s when our trusted medical director, Dr. Martin, arrived for a follow-up examination, complete with a fresh set of X-rays. What we found was surprising and concerning in equal measure.

While Gwen did exhibit some arthritic changes in her stifle, they weren’t the root cause of her pain and lameness. The X-ray images revealed the shocking truth – Gwen had sustained fractures. In her playful interactions with her fellow sheep friends, the likely scenario is that Gwen experienced blunt trauma, resulting in fractures to both her tibia and fibula. To make matters more challenging, her ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) had either torn or suffered severe stress. It was a difficult diagnosis, but Gwen’s fighting spirit persisted.

The silver lining in this situation is that the X-rays also revealed something remarkable – the fractures were already healing exceptionally well. Gwen’s stifle brace offered the much-needed support for her knee, and she’s now on a four-week journey of stall rest. We remain optimistic that the fractures and the damage to her ACL will heal with time.

Gwen’s path to recovery is far from over. She’s scheduled for another examination and a series of progression X-rays next month to monitor her healing progress closely. We’re showering her with all the love, scritches, and snacks she could ever want to keep her spirits high during her recovery.

We kindly ask for your thoughts and prayers for Gwen’s smooth and complete healing. Your support means the world to us and the animal residents we cherish at Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary.
